This 2016 Suzuki GSX-S1000 is the naked GSX-R1000 that riders had been asking Suzuki for. At its heart is the near-mythical long-stroke K5 GSX-R1000 motor, retuned for road use with 3% lighter pistons and rings, re-profiled inlet and exhaust cams, a new airbox, 4-2-1 exhaust and long-nose 10-hole injectors. It produces 143 bhp with 78.2 lb-ft of torque, gurgling and growling through the rev range with a huge spread of power and a proper top-end hit above 8,000rpm.
The chassis is genuine sportsbike hardware. The cast aluminium twin-spar frame is actually lighter than the road-going superbike's, with a longer wheelbase and calmer geometry for road stability, and the aluminium swingarm is lifted straight from the GSX-R1000. It's agile, stable and confidence-inspiring, with 43mm fully adjustable KYB forks up front and a rear shock adjustable for preload and rebound. Brembo calipers on twin 310mm discs come from the GSX-R too, with a 250mm rear.
Three-stage traction control is standard and fully switchable, with the ECU making 250 calculations a second from wheel-speed, throttle, crank and gear position sensors. The full LCD dash shows rpm, speed, gear position, TC setting, clock, fuel gauge and trips.
