The CBR500R is the A2 licence sports bike that works just as well once you’ve passed your test. The 471cc parallel twin produces exactly 47bhp, the A2 ceiling, with 31lb-ft of torque and a usable spread that pulls from low revs without needing to be revved out. There is no restrictor kit involved, so nothing to remove later and nothing to go wrong.
The 2016 update brought a proper step up over the earlier bike: preload-adjustable 41mm forks, a bigger 320mm front disc, new LED lighting and sharper Fireblade-influenced bodywork. At 194kg with a 785mm seat height it is easy to manage at a standstill and light enough to enjoy once moving.
Honda twin is a proven unit, and insurance for a 47bhp bike is a fraction of what a 600 costs a younger rider. The 15.7 litre tank and genuine 70mpg-plus economy give close to 250 miles of range.
It is also a comfortable bike to spend time on. The riding position is sporty without being punishing, there is room for a pillion, and the full fairing offers real wind protection on a motorway, which most A2 bikes do not.
