This 2008 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade is the SC59 generation, the ground-up rethink developed by the same team behind Honda's MotoGP effort, and it's still regarded as one of the sweetest-handling litre bikes ever built. The all-new 999cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline four has titanium valves, a bigger bore and shorter stroke, lighter pistons and a 13,000rpm redline, producing around 175 bhp with a flawlessly smooth, rev-happy delivery.
The headline is the chassis. A lighter, narrower die-cast frame using ultra-thin-wall construction, plus a relentless obsession with saving weight everywhere from the wheels to the side stand, brings it down to just 199kg. The result is race-like steering that's quick and responsive yet supremely stable — MCN memorably described it as a 600 supersport with the guts of a 1000. It handles like it's on rails.
Suspension is fully adjustable at both ends: a 43mm inverted HMAS cartridge fork and Unit Pro-Link HMAS rear shock, both adjustable for preload, rebound and compression. Braking comes from radial-mounted four-piston calipers on full-floating 320mm front discs with a 220mm rear. The gearbox is widely praised as one of the slickest Honda has ever made.
