The 2009 Yamaha R1 is an exceptional in-line-four cylinder sports bike, unlike any other. It's nothing short of sensational. The Yamaha R1's ultra-short-stroke engine features a cross-plane crankshaft with crank pins set at 90° and irregular firing intervals, which was directly borrowed from Valentino Rossi's factory YZR-M1.
Even at a standstill, the engine revs up like a two-stroke, and while in motion, the R1's ability to accelerate, irrespective of the revs, is astounding. Thanks to the smart engine design, it growls off corners like a V-twin, providing an outstanding feel through the rear tire and screams along straightaways like the fierce and aggressive in-line-four that it is.
What's even more impressive is that, thanks to its big bang firing order, it produces the same sound as Rossi's M1 at full throttle.
